Did you miss out on the most recent market run-up?

Don't worry about it - and don't try to play catch-up in order to catch up for having been "out of the market" if that is the case.

Often times, after people see the markets go up, they feel like they are missing something that others are benefitting from. And then they try to play catch-up in order to make the returns that were available to those who invested near the bottom of the market selloff.

What people forget, is that in order to get those types of return, you would have had to be willing to accept the levels of risk associated with them. When the markets were near the most recent bottom, there was a lot of uncertainty. If you did not buy at that time, it may mean that you do not feel comfortable dealing with uncertainty.

Don't change who you are... there is always an opportunity to invest in the market. Don't try to adjust the level of risk that you are willing to accept, in order to obtain a higher rate of return, unless you have given thought as to what would happen if your investments lost value rather than went up.

All too often, I see clients become more willing to take on risk, after the market has already had a big run-up. I guess it is like the herd-mentality, where if everyone else is doing it, it must be ok. Unfortunately, it often times works against the investor to act with the herd.
